Bolt launches Passkey Authentication—enabling a faster and more secure login experience before the holidays
Nov 16, 2023

Today, Bolt is launching Passkey Authentication—making it even easier for customers to log in and checkout. Passkeys allow shoppers to log in to sites without having to enter a password. Instead, passkeys utilize device-specific methods of verification including:
- PIN: shopper uses a short code that is stored on their device to log in
- Touch ID: shopper uses their fingerprint instead of a password to log in
- Face ID: shopper uses facial recognition instead of a password to log in
Security and simplicity for shoppers
Passkey Authentication allows retailers to offer mobile shoppers a fast yet ultra-secure method to access their accounts. Instead of pecking in cumbersome passwords, shoppers can validate their identity through quick passkey techniques they already use to unlock their devices each day.
In terms of speed, shoppers can validate their identity in as little as one second using biometrics like facial recognition* or a fingerprint scan on their device. Or they can enter the same 4-6 digit PIN code they rely on for device access. This represents a massive improvement over typing in a traditional password, which requires an average of 14 seconds just to manually enter the characters.**
Passkeys also offer greater security protection versus old-fashioned passwords. Passkeys cannot be stolen in data breaches because they utilize device-specific verification and avoid centralized storage. In contrast, traditional passwords get easily compromised by hackers since they remain vulnerable on retailer servers.
